pleading guilty to an El Monte robbery, officials said Tuesday. James Leonard Amaya, whose last known address is Perris, pleaded guilty Friday to second degree robbery in a Los Angeles courthouse as part of a plea deal, said El Monte Police Detective Ralph Batres. Batres said Amaya had also been charged with kidnapping during the commission of a robbery, which would have given him a life sentence if convicted. However, he pleaded not guilty to that charge. Amaya was a member of an El Monte based gang and accused of kidnapping a man who was smoking a cigarette by his truck on Sept. 21, 2011, Batres said. Amaya forced the man to get into his car, put a knife under his neck and demanded that he give him money. The victim handed over his money, and drove around the city as Amaya said repeatedly that he wanted to kill someone, he said. Amaya then had the victim drive him to a bar to contact some gang members. At that point, the victim drove off, contacted the police and Amaya was arrested, Batres said. WHITTIER Transient accused of arson A woman was arrested Tuesday for allegedly setting a fire that burned bushes, a billboard and a vehicle. Damages were estimated at $50,000. A sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was detaining a transient at the scene. "The deputy said he saw a female exit the bushes located on the north side of Whittier Boulevard and east of Philadelphia Street. When the female exited the bushes, the bushes became engulfed in flames," Whittier police spokesman Officer Brad White said. The sergeant detained the woman and radioed for the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Whittier police. White said several city bushes, a billboard and a vehicle in the parking lot of Rasmussen Iron Works was damaged by the fire. Fawn Brewer, a 47 year old transient, was arrested on suspicion of arson. She was being held on $20,000 bail at the Whittier Police Station jail. LA PUENTE Two deputies hurt in garage fire A garage fire sent two deputies to a hospital and caused damages estimated at $130,000 on Tuesday. Sgt. Two deputies went to a hospital for smoke inhalation, Suh said. The fire didn't spread to the apartment, he added. The cause is still under investigation. DUARTE Garage fire engulfs boat, motorhome Fire broke out in a garage Monday night and also burned a motorhome and a boat. in the 2900 block of Freeborn Street. Lt. William Wicker of the sheriff's Temple station said the residents weren't injured. He said the fire started in a garage and spread to a motorhome and then a 20 foot long boat parked on the driveway. ALTADENA Fire chars tree, fence and shed An extension cord connected to an outlet tripped a breaker and started an outdoor fire that burned a tree, a shed and part of a fence Monday night, fire officials said. PICO RIVERA Men garbed in black rob market of $80 Two robbers dressed all in black and wearing bandannas over their faces took $80 at gunpoint from a market Monday night. Lt. robbery at Angelica's Market in the 4200 block of Rosemead Blvd. Two men walked into the store and demanded money from a cashier, he said. One of the robbers was armed with a black revolver. Once they were handed the money, the robbers ran out the store. One of the suspects was described as Latino, stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. His accomplice was described as Latino, 6 feet tall and about 180 pounds. Mendoza said the men wore black hooded sweatshirts, black gloves and black pants. HACIENDA HEIGHTS Stabbing victim turns up in hospital A wounded man who ended up in an Orange county hospital on the weekend was allegedly stabbed in Hacienda Heights, officials said. Deputies went to UC Irvine Medical Center where they found the victim. The man was at a party in Hacienda Heights on Friday where he was stabbed, according to Sheriff's Sgt. John Suh. He said the victim went home and was taken by a relative the next day to a hospital. No other details about the alleged attack were available. Suh said the victim was uncooperative.
