Ali learned about Habitat for Humanity through a counselor at the International Rescue Committee. Rachel Smith, who works for the local Habitat chapter, remembers the day Ali came to apply.
The couple and a son, Rejoice, who is now 5, were resettled in Abilene through the International Rescue Committee. Rejoice now has a brother, Daniel, 3, who was born in Abilene.

Ali exclaimed when hearing the word, holiday and the food associated with it have become a favorite of the Mitachi family since their arrival here as in 2007 as refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In addition to the Mitachis, six other refugee families in Abilene live in Habitat homes, Mendoza said.

Refugees thankful to call Abilene home
And now, they have their own house in Abilene, thanks to Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that makes affordable housing available through a combination of volunteer labor and donations of money and materials. People who get a Habitat home must provide equity by donating hours of labor to the organization, usually building a house.
Eventually, they were resettled in Abilene, which has been home to a branch office of the International Rescue Committee since 2003. The IRC is a nonprofit organization that assists the State Department in resettling refugees.
