speeding charge the night of June 21, 1964. The police released them to a lynch mob that kidnapped, tortured and executed them.Their car was torched and their bullet riddled corpses were buried in an earthen dam in rural Neshoba County.Their killers were brazen enough to murder them. But being bullies and cowards, they hid the evidence to escape punishment. Then they demanded one another's silence under penalty of death. But someone did talk, which is how the world knows what happened.I was 14 the summer Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner became heroes to be mourned in households where freedom, equality and justice were venerated.Like millions of concerned Americans, I followed the dramatic search for the missing men in the newspaper and on the evening news. Nobody except bigots believed Mississippi lawmen's assertions the missing men were hiding to make headlines for their cause. When the bodies were pulled from the dam by the FBI, it confirmed Southern whites were in the same league of merciless killers as Germany's Nazis, then the gold standard of evil.Goodman and Schwerner were white, Jewish and from New York, which may have sealed their fate with the Southern Christians who shot them. Chaney was black, a native Mississippian educated in segregated Catholic schools. He could have been the pope's nephew and still those racist rednecks would have beaten and killed him.The executions were ordained by the Ku Klux Klan, who saw the civil rights movement as a threat to white supremacy and the Southern caste system that put the crudest, dumbest white man above the most intelligent, eloquent person of color.Registering blacks to vote drove a fear in cold, white hearts not felt since Sherman marched to the sea.Like the rest of the American South, Mississippi was an apartheid system where viciousness and violence toward blacks were not just tolerated but encouraged. It was a model of injustice rivaling South Africa's.A century after emancipation and the Civil War, the South was a risky place for blacks, minorities and sympathetic outsiders. Especially at risk were those who challenged the status quo by encouraging blacks to demand equality. How bad things were became evident to the entire country during the search for the civil rights workers. The bodies of five other blacks presumably murdered by whites were found where they were dumped. That summer of 1964 was to be the tipping point for civil rights. Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner were among thousands of white and black students and activists who went South on a voter education registration crusade they called Freedom Summer. It was a follow up to the Freedom Riders campaigns of 1961 and 1962, when the commitment to nonviolent protest was met with violence and brutality from white Southerners. When the state of Mississippi refused to try the trio's killers it was a shock to Americans who naively believed in justice for all.It took three more years to bring the killers Under Armour Shoes Black to trial. And then it was in federal court (for violating the victims' civil rights, not murder). Most of the accused got off. None served more than a few years. Justice, it seemed, was as rare in Mississippi as snow.Four decades passed before the state of Mississippi recanted its refusal to prosecute the confederacy of killers and finally put the ringleader on trial.By 2006, when he was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder, Edgar Ray Killen was an old man. Most of his co conspirators were dead. He had enjoyed a long life of freedom, which his victims did not.In an irony that must have left God reaching for the Prozac, Killen was a Baptist Under Armour Curry 1 Lux

Fifty years ago, three young civil rights activists who believed Jefferson's assertion that all men are created equal discovered with their final breaths that idealism can be no match for ignorance, fear and hatred. The three were arrested in Philadelphia, Miss., on a trumped up Under Armour Clutchfit Drive 4 Leak

minister albeit one whose depraved interpretation of Christianity was analogous to the spirit of "Mein Kampf" rather than the New Testament. As they drove that gauntlet of hate the last night of their lives, Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner couldn't be certain justice eventually would triumph. Neither would they know they wouldn't live to see it.It was coincidental, but just 10 days after they were murdered, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law.A year later the Voting Rights Act became law. The South finally had lost its civil war, though it took another generation for the hatred to subside and democracy to emerge.Today, 50 years after the murders of Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner, Edgar Ray Killen is 89, unrepentant and still in prison. That's where the tiniest measure of justice will see to it he dies Under Armour Curry 2.5 - Men's
